Put safety first
Before stepping into a flooded basement, think about electricity. If water may be near outlets, appliances or the electrical panel, stay out and arrange to have power shut off safely. Kitchener-Wilmot Hydro or a licensed electrician can help if you cannot reach the panel without entering water.
Find out where the water came from
The source affects how cleanup should proceed. Water from a burst supply line is relatively clean, while water from a floor drain or from outside should be treated as contaminated.
- Check the sump pump and its power supply
- Look for water around the water heater and laundry area
- Check floor drains for backup
- Look at window wells and foundation walls
Document the damage
Take photos and videos of the water, affected rooms and damaged belongings before moving anything. This helps when you speak with your insurance provider.
Start removing water and wet items
If it is safe, move belongings to a dry area. Wet carpet, cardboard boxes and fabric hold water and slow drying. For more than a small amount of water, professional extraction is usually faster and more thorough.
Dry thoroughly
Visible water is only part of the problem. Drywall, insulation and framing can hold moisture for days. Structural drying with dehumidifiers and moisture readings helps confirm the space is truly dry before repairs.
